May 24, 2010: Folking your brains out

The fine woman and boys of Bronze Leaf are releasing Bread Crumbs, one of the most beautiful records to come from Edmonton this year, at Rutherford House this Thursday.

This show was only actually intermittently folky, but there is simply no such thing as a bad pun involving folk music.

  1. “Drunk Girls” – LCD Soundsystem, This is Happening
    - Check out the raucous, Spike Jonze-directed video (who knew he still did music videos?)
  2. “Text Edit” – Bronze Leaf, Bread Crumbs
    - You should most definitely check out their upcoming album release show this Thursday, and not just because it’s at Rutherford House
  3. “Life of Dreams” – Julie Doiron, I Can Wonder What You Did With Your Day
    - We would probably play Julie Doiron once a set if we were allowed. Or lay around with her on a couch, stroking her hair, if we were allowed.
  4. “Hail Me King” – The Olympic Symphonium, Chapter One
    - This is actually their second album, if memory serves. Pretty stuff from Fredericton, not a town eminently known for pretty stuff
  5. “Money” – The Flaming Lips and Stardeath and White Dwarfs with Henry Rollins and Peaches Doing The Dark Side of the Moon
    - Technically we did not actually play this song, but the intention was there. And anyway, yes, this album is exactly as insane as it sounds.
  6. “Outlaw” – Hobbins, Wizard of Words
    - Former smalls guitarist + poetry-spitting fellow with mild autism = one of the weirdest releases from this neck of the woods ever
  7. “Grass” – Animal Collective, Feels
    - Without taking away anything from Merriweather Post Pavilion, Feels might still be the best Animal Collective album there is.
  8. “Year’s Not Long” – Male Bonding, Nothing Hurts
    - I couldn’t find an embeddable version, but you should check out this video anyway, featuring a particularly potent version of male bonding, as it were
  9. “Tell Me It Isn’t Your Blood” – Long Long Long, Long Long Long
    - York Redoubt is dead. Long Long Long live York Redoubt
  10. “Everything Falling Apart” – Nice Nice, Extra Wow
    - If I hadn’t accidentally messed up the CD player, you’d have heard this:
  11. “Troublesome Houses” – Bonnie “Prince” Billy and the Cairo Gang, The Wonder Show of the World
    - There is no such thing as a bad Bonnie “Prince” Billy Song, either
  12. “Choosing to Fly” – The Sadies, Darker Circles
    - Guess who’s coming to town?
  13. “Sigh No More” – Mumford & Sons, Sigh No More
    - What Fleet Foxes would sound like if they got hit by a pick-up truck
  14. “Hard as Nails” – Peter Wolf Crier, Inter-Be
    - Jagjaguwar rarely steers you wrong, as these Minnesota boys attest
